COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

Mr James Tamblyn

With College Chaplain John Morton on Long Service Leave throughout Term 2 we have been very fortunate to have Reverend Sue Page (Junior School) and The Venerable David Bassett (Middle/Senior Schools) lead our Worship Programs throughout this period. Both Sue and David are already members of the 亚洲无码 community; Sue as a parent and David a member of the College Board. We are most grateful to them both for giving their time to support the College in this way.听

To conclude his leadership of Term 2 Worship Program with the Middle and Senior Schools, David celebrated a communion service on Thursday 17 June, having prepared students gradually for this more formal worship over previous weeks. Our students engaged exceptionally well with this experience, organised to further teach about the Christian faith and deepen an understanding of, in this case, our Anglican Church traditions. We look forward to providing a similar service for our Middle and Senior School students, celebrated by one of our local Uniting Church ministers, in Semester Two.听听

As we approach the end of Term 2, I take the opportunity to thank families for your ongoing commitment to work in partnership with the College. The first half of the year has been exceptionally busy. I trust that the three-week mid-year break will provide for you all an opportunity to spend some quality time with family.听

My thanks to our staff for their outstanding contributions to the community in the first half of the year. As I often say, the quality of a school cannot exceed the quality of its staff, and 亚洲无码 is blessed to have such a high calibre of people committed to the very best educational outcomes for our students.听听

Semester 1 Reports will be circulated to families towards the end of the first week of term break. A reminder that Term 3 commences on Monday 19 July.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

A reminder to families that听Term听2 will finish next week on Friday 25 June.

School will dismiss at the normal time of 3:15pm on that day.

Students’ Semester 1 reports will be available on Friday 2 July and families will be advised when they are available on SEQTA.

The College Office will be closed from Monday 5 July to Wednesday 14 July and will reopen on Thursday 15 July.听 Should you need to contact the College during that period, please email听pedare@pedarecc.sa.edu.au听or leave a message on 8280 1700.

The Junior School Office will be closed for the full 3 weeks of the听term听break, Monday 28 June – Friday 16 July.

Term听3 will commence on Monday 19 July.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL/HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

Mr Andrew Whiteman

鈥楾he greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure鈥

During last week’s Senior School Independent Learning Day, mountaineer and Mt Everest guide Steve Bell spoke to the students about his biggest fears and how he overcame them. Steve used inspirational stories of his life and memories as the first person to lead a commercial expedition to the summit of Mount Everest to engage our students. He reminded students that to make no choice and to waste an opportunity is the biggest mistake of all. To take the first step, either up a cliff face or on your upcoming assignment is the most important step. Along with his stories about growing up and attempting mountain climbing he talked about the meticulous preparation required to climb the highest peak in the world. Perfect preparation leads to perfect performance and again relating this back to students at school proved effective.听

Senior students used their time wisely during this day and appreciated the time to complete the work required. The study skills sessions included providing students with a study timetable so they could plan ahead and write down what and when they were going to study. The act of writing study times down was explained as much more effective than just thinking about studying at a certain time. Every successful athlete in the world writes down their goals and works to achieve them. Again there is no difference between this and effective study habits.听

Please find attached here the link for the Stage One and Year 10 examination timetables.听

Students are required to be in their formal uniform for all examinations. Students only need to attend the exams that they have for that day as there will be no scheduled lessons whilst exams are occurring. When students have two exams on one day the College library and the Wattle Centre will be allocated as quiet study areas. Students will not be able to leave the College grounds and then return for afternoon exams. We look forward to a successful week and if you have any questions relating to the upcoming examinations please do not hesitate to contact me.听

In Week 9 two exciting and special events will take place. The College Formal will be held on Friday 25th June at the Adelaide Convention Centre. I am sure that our Year 12 students will make the most of the night and thoroughly enjoy their evening. Our Year 11 students will experience 2 wonderful days on Thursday 24 and 25 June when they attend the upcoming Year 11 camp. This is effectively 2 one day experiences that have been designed to challenge the students to step out of their comfort zones whilst enjoying some friendly competition. Last year’s Year 11 cohort missed the opportunity due to COVID so we are very pleased to be providing this event again.听

Student reports will be made available on SEQTA Engage on Friday 2 July. Please ensure that your log in details are current and that you can access SEQTA Engage to receive your child鈥檚 report.听

I hope you have a wonderful term break.听

HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

听Mrs Lauren Brooks

Diversity Day

Diversity Day was another fantastic experiential learning initiative in our Middle School. Students and staff engaged in deep learning experiences that gave students the chance to be curious, investigate and actively use their knowledge in unique and authentic ways.听

While these days can be challenging, new and out of our comfort zones, they provide incomparable exposure to real world experiences and give students the chance to solve problems and work through difficult situations.听

Diversity Day saw such high engagement and enjoyment through a love of learning. This day also promoted great learning for us as staff, to reflect on these learning experiences and see how the values from experiential learning can transcend into our normal disciplines.听

Thank you to our 亚洲无码 community for your support of these learning initiatives, and we look forward to many more into the future.听

Social Media

We had the opportunity to speak with all Year 7 students this week to discuss social media use and email etiquette. We understand many of our Year 7 students are relatively new in the social media sphere and are exploring the benefits of connecting with friends, family and peers through this medium.听

During our discussion, students are reminded to consider their footprint through their digital interactions. I encouraged students to consider how to present their best selves and to use our manners, whilst online.听

We regularly talk to our students about the importance of kindness and inclusion. We reminded students that our high expectations continue beyond the normal school hours and into their digital communication and connections as well.

We also reminded students that their College email is for educational purposes to communicate with their teachers, in a professional and eloquent manner.听

Year 9 Community Projects

Our Year 9 students are inching closer to completing their Year 9 Community Project.听

This is a significant body of work completed over the first six months of the year, as students work towards completing their IB MYP experience and prepare for SACE and beyond.听

Throughout the project, students have participated in a self-directed inquiry task within a global context. This investigation has allowed students to enhance their communication skills, be responsible, enhance their knowledge on a broad topic and appreciate the process of learning through serving others.听

We look forward to welcoming all Year 9 students and parents to Mallee on June 24 at 6pm to celebrate the learning from this Community Project journey.听

HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Mr听Randall Pearce

A wonderful part of each term is when we come together to celebrate the learning that has occurred over the term.听 I particularly look forward to the Shine Awards to see at who has received the awards and for what.听

I am proud to see the PYP learner profile and attitudes to learning are alive and well received in each classroom and in the students who have been awarded this term.听 It is great to hear that students are being respectful of each other, being role models to others through being both principled and caring, being enthusiastic in class and eager to explore new ideas. Students are taking risks in their learning, persisting through challenging times and being curious about the world we live in.听听

When I look at the list of students each term, I know that many may feel sad because they missed out.听 They might have also missed out on a role in the musical, a sporting team, PSV or even a School Captain鈥檚 position and therefore feel disappointed that they have never been publicly acknowledged.听听

I know first-hand how hard it is for class teachers to choose who is going to receive such acknowledgement in the class.听 We lose sleep and may work long and hard, unfortunately there is no perfect system.听

Every time a child copes with disappointment, he/she is learning that sometimes life is unfair. It is a lesson that effort may go unrewarded, that goodness doesn鈥檛 always trump popularity. This is such a hard lesson, but such a valuable training for life.

As educators and parents, how do we help our children cope with the disappointment when they do not receive a badge or an award? Here are some tips:

  1. Talk about the possible outcomes before the event. Allow your child to understand that not all children can and will receive an award. This helps your child to consider both outcomes and to start being mentally prepared.
  2. Build in some resilience (internal dialogue) that your child can say to and about themselves to help manage the disappointment. 鈥淚 always try hard.鈥 And 鈥淚 am more than a certificate and more than a badge.鈥澨
  3. Plan your own ceremony to award your child. Make a list of the attributes (not the outcomes) that have helped your child to become successful 鈥 like persistence, confidence, putting effort, being kind, helping others.
  4. Have real discussions with your child about your own life experiences. Children learn that parents and teachers experience disappointments 鈥 and even though they might hurt at the time, they鈥檙e able to move on and be successful anyway. This can be done by parents at home and by teachers leading up to award ceremonies, to help children to emotionally prepare themselves.
  5. Acknowledge your child鈥檚 feelings 鈥 try not to diminish them. It鈥檚 okay for your child to feel sad, let down and disappointed. Help your child to find ways to manage those big feelings so that they don鈥檛 become overwhelmed. Encourage them to do something that distracts them, something fun, plan an event, write some goals.

As parents and educators, our most important job is to prepare our children for life. Life has its disappointments and building and banking resilience is the key to flourishing, happiness and success.

As this is the last Vine for the term I wish you a very enjoyable break as you take this time to refresh and re-energise. See you back soon for an amazing Term 3.听

A GIFT FOR ‘MR T’

To farewell Mr Tymukas as he embarks on the next chapter of his life, we decided to create a gift that he will treasure for life. During this semester our class visited an exhibition by his favourite听 Australian artist , Clarice Beckette. We were inspired by her free flowing brushstrokes and delicate floating colours and aimed to create a painting in this same style. We brainstormed a couple of ideas and were inspired to create a painting that portrayed Mr Tymukas and his loving dog ‘Oma’ walking on a lovely autumn afternoon.

We all enjoyed composing this artwork for Mr Tymukas and will always remember the compassion he showed towards all of his classes throughout his years at 亚洲无码. In the future we endeavour to continue showing our passion for art. We thank him for sharing his stories, humour and knowledge of art with us.

Maya Kancheff, Cassia Iacob, and Michelle Liu.

STUDENT NEWS

YEAR 3 – ANIMALS ANONYMOUS INCURSION

During our Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry, the Year 3 students have been exploring the Central Idea听‘the survival of a species is dependent on the environment.’听听We invited Adrian Sheriff, who was the South Australia Science Excellence+ Innovation Award finalist for 2020. Adrian brought his furry friends from Animals Anonymous to visit, enabling us to have an up close, hands on experience with Native Australian Animals and further discuss the fragility of their habitats. Among many other animals, the students enjoyed feeling the soft fur of the Squirrel Glider, the rough scales of the Monitor Lizard, and the strong body of the Carpet Python.

Mrs Millie Noblett 鈥 Year 3 Teacher

We got to pat a parrot named Rocky. He lives in a rainforest and he is a reptile. He is related to dinosaurs!”听Owen

We听saw a snake, it lives on the land and it is a reptile.听Bhavighna

“We saw the parrot fly onto Mrs Wallace’s arm, and the squirrel glider glided off Mrs Owen’s arm onto a blanket.”听Charli

“We got to feel a lot of animals and we learned what groups they were in. The Bettong is now extinct in South Australia.”听Gemma

YEAR 5 – CHINESE COOKING LESSON

In the inquiry into where we are in place and time, Year 5 students explored food and drinks in China and Australia. Chinese regional food, its recipes and the causations of food choice were also being investigated. As part of the action plan, students had an opportunity to make dumplings of their own and experienced the unique Chinese cooking method. Students were highly engaged in this learning experience and motivated to learn more about Chinese culture.

Ms. Grace Liu – R-5 Chinese teacher

“In week 7, we made dumplings in Chinese class. After a quick explanation, we started making our dumplings. First, we had to get our dough. Second, we put a little spoonful of mixture in the middle of our dough. Thirdly, we spread some water around the outside of the dough with our fingers. The last step was to seal the dough together to form our dumplings. We then put all the dumplings on a plate and let them get boiled. After they were boiled, we got some sauce and started to eat our dumplings, they were delicious!” Harry Green and Samuel Norsworthy听

“I really enjoyed making the dumplings, because I had never made them before and I learnt a new skill and now I can make them at home.” 鈥 Tanvi Sahota

“I liked putting the vegetables in the dumplings because it made it easier to fold into different shapes.” 鈥 Dakota Harris

“I had never made dumplings before and they tasted really good considering it was the first time I have ever eaten them.” 鈥 Hudson Thomas

“They tasted so much better when they were made fresh instead of the ones you heat up.” Cooper Lambrakis

“I liked making it myself because its more enjoyable when you make them on your own.” 鈥 Levi Wallis

YEAR 6/7 – STATEWIDE SCHOOL NETBALL COMPETITION

亚洲无码 hosted 3 schools on Tuesday, 15th of June for the Statewide School Sport Year 7 Netball Competition. Coached by Mrs Jude Johnson, the 亚洲无码 team played well and demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship while enjoying their time on court implementing their hard work. The team produced wins against Trinity Gardens Primary School and St Columba. Disappointingly, Kildare were too strong on the day and were victors, seeing them advance to the next round.

Hayley Mayer – Specialist Program in Netball (SPIN) Coordinator

YEAR 9 – CENTRAL MARKETS EXCURSION

Students were delighted to attend the Adelaide Central Markets on Thursday of Week 7. After a short bus ride into the city, the students walked to the Walyo Yerta Community Garden on South Terrace where a volunteer gardener, Greg, spoke to them about what is grown and who benefits from this. The challenge of collecting indigenous ingredients throughout the central markets was posed to the students as they eagerly accepted their monies and explored a series of shops and stalls to successfully accomplish this task. I was particularly impressed with the way that our students conducted themselves on the day and received many compliments from members of the public who took time to come and let us know how polite our students were. A big thank you goes to Mrs听Lani听Budiono who organised and orchestrated such an incredible day out for our students.

Mrs Bianca Chapman – Learning Area Coordinator Technologies

YEAR 9 – YOUNG WOMEN IN STEM

On Thursday 10th June, a small group of female Year 9 students were fortunate enough to attend a Young Women in STEM excursion at The University of Adelaide. This inspiring and well-structured event involved the girls participating in 4 engaging STEM related activities. This included using an algorithm to untangle a rope in Mathematics, making a DC motor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, making a matchbox rocket in Mechanical Engineering, and training a particular behaviour in Animal Science. One of the most rewarding parts was the opportunity for the students to talk to actual women scientists who shared their university experiences. It was clear that the girls found the day highly enlightening and rewarding as can be
seen by some of their comments below.

Mrs Bronwyn Dutch – Mathematics Teacher

“I enjoyed the individuality of every individual, the freedom to choose what you鈥檇 like to pursue as well as the multiple career paths and options. The university has something for everyone!” 听Sandra

“Speaking to active university students and talking about their experiences make the thought of university much less daunting.” 听Olivia S

“I enjoyed the talk about animal behaviours, how they鈥檙e trained, and the different types of training. The activity that came along with it was also very enjoyable and funny as we were trying to 鈥榯rain鈥 our friends.” 鈥 Charlene

“We learnt so much about different areas in STEM throughout the day. My personal favourite activity was the mathematical rope activity, because it was fun to work with equations to solve and untangle ropes that we tangled ourselves.” 鈥 Kenoli

“This trip to the University of Adelaide was one to remember. There were lots of hands-on activities that I enjoyed. Some of these included creating a matchbox rocket and a DC motor. I would highly recommend this excursion to anyone who gets the chance to go.” 鈥 Annabel

“Throughout today we were all given the opportunity to be collaborative learners and work together to solve engaging STEM issues. For example, in the maths challenge we were tasked with using an algorithm to solve a 鈥榯angled rope鈥 issue. My personal favourite was doing the engineering challenge as I was able to win the competition.” 鈥 Louise

YE-HA!

On Thursday 17 June, Year 4 – 7 students were thrilled to present Ye-Ha Musical, a great evening of entertainment with plenty of laughs, heartfelt messages, witty comedy and ridiculously catchy tunes. Families, staff and students were entertained by the very talented students during the show. It was amazing to see students shine, as they sang and danced to entertain the audience.

The last performance will be tonight 18 June, 7pm at Golden Grove Arts Centre.
